The Canine

The dog and cat are the only two species that we have changed their diet completely from the appropriate nutrition they should be having!

About Your Dog

Dogs are Carnivores, they have the dentition to hold, tear and shear meat and a digestive tract shorter than us and herbivores because they don’t need to ferment plant material in their intestines. They have no requirement for carbohydrates and are not designed to digest much of it.

Humans have amylase in their saliva which is the starting process of breaking down carbohydrates, it is then further broken down by digestive enzymes released from the pancreas. Dogs don’t have any amylase in their saliva which is another clue that tells us that dogs are carnivores. Yes domestic dogs have more copies of the amylase gene than wolves (not all breeds though), this has evolved over the years, but it is still not enough to say they should be digesting large volumes of carbohydrates.

In the wild wolves will eat a small amount of plant matter or vegetation when eating the prey they have caught and piercing the stomach contents and intestines.

By feeding them a species specific diet gives them the best chance of living a healthy life with reduced chances of getting the health problems that ultra processed food causes.
